Add an historically interesting British express passenger locomotive to your collection with this detailed model of BR Patriot Class 4-6-0 No. 45540 “Sir Robert Turnbull”, presented in its post-rebuild British Railways condition and reproduced in OO Gauge / 1:76 scale.

No. 45540 enjoyed a career spanning both LMS and British Railways service and underwent a significant transformation during its working life. Originally emerging from Crewe Works in August 1933 as No. 5901, the locomotive was subsequently renumbered 5540.

A major change came in October 1947, when the locomotive was rebuilt with a Stanier taper boiler. This upgrade resulted in its power classification being increased from 6P to 7P, reflecting the improved capabilities of the rebuilt locomotive.

Following the formation of British Railways, it became BR No. 45540 in May 1948.

This model represents “Sir Robert Turnbull” after rebuilding, making it particularly appealing to enthusiasts interested in the development of LMS locomotive designs and their subsequent careers under British Railways.

The locomotive is supplied DCC Ready with a 21-pin decoder socket and is compatible with the Hornby HM7000-21TXS Bluetooth® & DCC Sound Decoder, providing an upgrade path for modellers wanting digital and sound operation.

History of No. 45540

The locomotive began its working life as No. 5901, emerging from Crewe Works in August 1933. It was later renumbered 5540.

In October 1947, No. 5540 underwent a significant rebuild and received a Stanier taper boiler. The rebuild resulted in the locomotive moving from power classification 6P to 7P.

Under British Railways ownership, the locomotive was renumbered 45540 in May 1948.

Its name, “Sir Robert Turnbull”, had previously been carried by withdrawn Large Claughton locomotive No. 1161. The name honoured Sir Robert Turnbull, a former General Manager of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) who was knighted in 1913.

No. 45540 remained in service until it was condemned in April 1963 and was scrapped by July 1963, bringing almost three decades of service to an end.
