The Class 57 was created through an extensive rebuild of the familiar Class 47, retaining its basic bodyshell while receiving significant mechanical upgrades. Between 1998 and 2004, 33 locomotives were rebuilt by Brush Traction at Loughborough, receiving reconditioned EMD engines and updated traction equipment to improve reliability.

Locomotive 57306, formerly numbered 47814, went on to become part of the GB Railfreight fleet. Hornby's model captures this modern-era locomotive in GBRf presentation while combining the accessible durability of the RailRoad Plus range with digital technology.
