Celebrate one of Britain's most famous preserved express steam locomotives with the Hornby One Collection BR Royal Scot Class No. 46100 “Royal Scot”, beautifully reproduced in OO Gauge / 1:76 scale and presented in its elegant British Railways green livery.

As the first member of its class, No. 6100 “Royal Scot” entered LMS service in 1927. Designed by Henry Fowler, the Royal Scot Class was created as a powerful three-cylinder express passenger locomotive for some of the LMS network's most prestigious services.

This model represents the locomotive in its later British Railways No. 46100 identity and rebuilt condition, following its conversion with a taper boiler in 1950.

Part of Hornby's One Collection range, the model has an additional connection to railway preservation history, with the full-size “Royal Scot” forming part of the locomotives associated with the One Collection at Margate.

For operation, the model features a 5-pole skew-wound motor, sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings.

It is supplied DCC Ready with a 21-pin decoder socket and is compatible with the Hornby HM7000-21TXS Bluetooth® & DCC Sound Decoder, providing an upgrade path to digital and sound operation.

History of “Royal Scot”

The first of its class, No. 6100 “Royal Scot”, entered service with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1927.

Designed by Henry Fowler as a three-cylinder express locomotive with a parallel boiler, the class was created to handle demanding express passenger services.

With insufficient manufacturing capacity available at the LMS locomotive works at the time, construction of the first 50 locomotives was awarded to the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow. The remaining 20 locomotives were subsequently constructed at Derby Works.

The 1933 American Tour

“Royal Scot” also has a particularly fascinating chapter in its history connected with the United States.

In 1933, No. 6100 exchanged identities with the newer No. 6152 “King's Dragoon Guardsman”, which had been built in 1930, in connection with attendance at the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago.

This episode helped make the Royal Scot name internationally recognised and adds another layer of historical interest to the locomotive.

British Railways & Preservation

Under British Railways, the locomotive became No. 46100 “Royal Scot”.

In 1950, it was rebuilt with a taper boiler, giving the locomotive the general configuration represented by its preserved form today.

Following withdrawal in 1962, “Royal Scot” survived into preservation rather than being lost to the scrapyard.

The locomotive returned to the main line in 2016 and has since become one of Britain's recognisable preserved express steam locomotives.

The One Collection

The One Collection brings together historically significant full-size railway locomotives, rolling stock, vehicles and railway memorabilia.

Unlike a conventional collection of miniature models, the subjects of the One Collection are the real, full-size vehicles themselves.

Vehicles within the collection have undergone, or are undergoing, extensive restoration with the aim of returning them to museum-quality presentation, with some also certified for operation on Britain's rail network.

Full-size locomotives staying at the Margate facility may also become honorary members of the collection for display, promotion and merchandising purposes.

This Hornby release celebrates “Royal Scot” and its association with the One Collection.
