The Class 90 was developed as a mixed-traffic electric locomotive for Britain's 25kV AC overhead network, replacing several ageing electric classes dating from the 1960s. A total of 50 locomotives were constructed at BREL Crewe between 1987 and 1990, initially seeing extensive service on the West Coast Main Line.

Equally capable of handling passenger and freight duties, the Class 90 continued to work for numerous operators following British Rail privatisation, including EWS, Freightliner, Virgin Trains, GNER and Greater Anglia.

Hornby's model represents 90020 during its time with EWS, when the locomotive carried the name “Collingwood” and the company's striking red and yellow colour scheme.

Designed in 1:76 scale for OO gauge layouts, the locomotive features NEM tension-lock couplings and is DCC Ready with a 21-pin decoder socket.
