Locomotive 90001 holds a special place in Class 90 history as the first member of the class. Originally considered an upgraded development of the Class 87 and initially intended to carry the Class 87/2 designation, 90001 was sent to the Rail Technical Centre at Derby for testing in October 1987 before entering service from Willesden depot.

The locomotive received the name “BBC Midlands Today” in 1989, which it carried until 2004. A decade later it was named “Crown Point” while based at Norwich with Abellio Greater Anglia.

In 2020, 90001 was acquired by Locomotive Services Limited for main-line excursion duties. It was subsequently repainted in the celebrated InterCity “Swallow” style livery and renamed “Royal Scot”, recreating the appearance associated with some of Britain's best-known express passenger trains.

Hornby's RailRoad model combines the distinctive appearance of the Class 90 with durable features designed for regular layout running. Produced in 1:76 scale for OO Gauge, it is DCC Ready with a 21-pin decoder socket, providing an easy upgrade path for digital operation.
