The real locomotive has enjoyed an exceptionally varied career spanning more than six decades. Originally built by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry, it entered service in February 1965 as D6966. Under the TOPS numbering system it became 37266 in 1974, before being rebuilt and reclassified as a Class 37/4 in January 1986, receiving its current number, 37422.

During its long working life, the locomotive has operated for several well-known railway companies and has carried numerous liveries. Operators have included EWS, DB Schenker and Direct Rail Services (DRS).

More recently, 37422 became part of the Harry Needle Railroad Company spot-hire fleet at Barrow Hill. That operation was taken over by Austrian railway construction and maintenance specialist Swietelsky in January 2025, with the locomotive receiving the name “Pegasus” later that year.

Hornby's RailRoad model recreates this colourful modern incarnation in 1:76 scale for OO Gauge, combining recognisable Class 37 styling with durable construction suited to regular layout operation.
