Hornby R30545TXS RailRoad Plus British Steel Class 37 - Teesside Steelmaster - Co-Co 37501 Diesel Locomotive Digital sound fitted

Bring a distinctive piece of British industrial railway history to your layout with the Hornby RailRoad Plus Class 37/5 No. 37501 “Teesside Steelmaster”, presented in its memorable British Steel pale blue livery and supplied factory-fitted with HM7000 digital sound.

Built by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry in Lancashire, the locomotive entered service in January 1961 as D6705, initially allocated to Stratford depot in London. Under the TOPS numbering system it later became 37005.

In April 1985, the locomotive underwent a substantial rebuild to Class 37/5 specification. The work included replacement of its original English Electric generator and a complete rewire, after which it emerged as 37501.

The locomotive was subsequently finished in the distinctive British Steel pale blue colour scheme, complete with British Steel branding and the Thornaby Kingfisher motif. In 1987 it received the memorable name “Teesside Steelmaster.”

Its story continued when it was converted to Class 37/6 specification for the proposed Channel Tunnel Nightstar sleeper project in 1995, becoming 37601. Following a long and varied career, the locomotive was returned to its celebrated 1987 appearance during a repaint in 2025.
