Early in 1972, Ford Motor Company released the XA GT Falcon in both sedan and hardtop versions. It was the first Falcon fully designed in Australia, marking a significant milestone in the model’s history. Bigger, bolder and more refined, the XA featured wider styling and improved comfort while retaining serious performance credentials.

The Legendary RPO83 “GT Special”

Only 891 XA GT hardtops were produced between July 1972 and September 1973, including just 129 RPO83 coupes. Officially listed as Regular Production Option 83, these highly sought-after GT Specials delivered enhanced performance and exclusivity.

Key performance upgrades included:

• 780cfm four-barrel Holley carburettor

• Fabricated exhaust extractors (hidden within the V-banks)

• Modified sump with additional baffles

• Manual choke

• Engine components originally intended for the cancelled Phase IV GT-HO

These enhancements boosted power by an additional 30–40bhp over the standard 300bhp output, enabling quarter-mile times in the high 14-second range and a top speed of approximately 140mph (225km/h).
