The GT originally began life as a limited edition XR, but demand was so strong that production expanded, securing the GT’s future as a standalone performance model. When the XT launched in March 1968, it continued the momentum — more powerful, more refined and available in a broader range of colours compared to the XR, which was offered only in GT Gold.

New XT GT colours included Springtime Yellow, GT Silver, Polar White, GT Gold, Candy Apple Red and Zircon Green Metallic, while the interior remained exclusively black.

The Falcon XT GT went head-to-head with Holden’s Monaro on both the road and the Bathurst circuit, marking the true beginning of the legendary Ford vs Holden rivalry that still resonates with enthusiasts today.
