Add a piece of authentic industrial railway history to your layout with this detailed Peckett W4 0-4-0ST steam locomotive. Representing Works No. 490 built in 1890, this compact yet powerful saddle tank engine was originally supplied to the Crawshay Brothers at the historic Cyfarthfa Ironworks in South Wales.
Built by Peckett & Sons, these sturdy industrial locomotives were designed for demanding duties in ironworks, collieries and factories. Their short wheelbase and rugged construction made them ideal for tight curves and heavy shunting work — features faithfully captured in this OO gauge model.
Historical Background
Peckett Works No. 490 was delivered to the Crawshay Brothers at Cyfarthfa Ironworks during a turbulent period in British industry. Despite significant investment to modernise production, the ironworks struggled to transition to steel manufacturing and ultimately closed in 1910.
The site briefly reopened during the First World War to produce pig iron and shell steel, before closing permanently in 1919. Locomotives like this played a vital role in keeping heavy industry moving during a defining era of British history.
