History
The Class 55 “Deltic” locomotives were introduced in 1961 to haul high-speed express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line. Powered by two Napier Deltic diesel engines, these locomotives produced immense power and became famous for their distinctive sound and performance.
All production locomotives were named after famous regiments or historical figures. No. 55002 ‘The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry’, affectionately known as “KOYLI”, carried a striking two-tone green livery that reflected the early British Rail diesel era, complete with yellow warning panels and white cab window surrounds.
The Class 55 fleet quickly became iconic among rail enthusiasts and remains one of the most celebrated diesel locomotive classes in British railway history.
